Goals, Targets & KPIs

When we talk about KPIs we do not use it interchangeable with Targets and Goals. Our definition is that Goals are something you set as a company. To reach those goals you define KPIs that you want to measure to ensure you are moving towards your goals. Once you have decided which KPIs to measure, you set targets for those KPIs.

For instance, a company goal could be to increase revenue by 10 %. This can be measured, and you can see if you progress towards it. To reach this goal, you need to do X amount of customer visits per sales rep. Therefore, you now have a KPI that is measuring customer visits. Once that is done, you can now set individual targets towards this KPI per sales rep.

This means each sales rep has a KPI with a target that in the big picture ensures progress towards the company goal.

What value does measuring KPI bring

Measuring KPIs and having KPIs is important, because it makes it possible for your company to do the following

  • Coach sales team
  • Solve problems
  • Tackle opportunities
  • Make adjustments to strategies

So, why should this be important? Well if you don't know what is going on in your business, it's hard to know if you are doing the right or wrong things. Being able to monitor your company health through KPIs makes it possible for you to solve problems, tackle opportunities, and make adjustments to your business strategy.

Working with KPIs can also be seen as a learning experience, where you have the possibility to spot negative progress and engage your employees in a coaching session where the focus is on improving their skills and knowledge, and not just focus on getting them to raise an activity level.

Both as a CEO, team manager or team member, being able to get a quick and efficient view of progress towards targets makes it possible for you to perform your best.
